We believe that sarees are the most versatile pieces in anyone’s wardrobe. They can be classic and timeless, but with a twist here and a tuck there, you can easily add a bit of modern flair to make the garment unique to you. Here are some ways our stylists at Panaah love wrapping their nine yards:

The Scarf/Cape

The Scarf wrap is a unique way to drape a handloom saree. This chic and effortless style is a simple, hands-free wrap that is perfect for a casual brunch or evening out when you want to make a statement without going over the top. Begin by tucking the saree into the petticoat as usual, but keep the pallu longer than usual. Then drape it around your neck for a classic scarf look or let it hang loose over your shoulder like a cape - pinning it at the top if needed. This style works exceptionally well with light, flowy fabrics like georgette or chiffon and even with lightweight cotton drapes.

The Belted Elegance

The saree-with-belt look is now a classic in its own right - and rightfully so! The belt introduces a sleek structured look to the traditional saree and keeps your hands free for your laptop for your big presentation, or your tote on your way to work. You can opt for a statement belt or a traditional kamarband to elevate the look. You can even skip the belt entirely and tie your pallu around your waist as a co-ord belt for a look that blends classic charm with contemporary poise.

The Bengal Drape

If you’ve ever wondered how to drape sarees in a Bengali way, look no further. The Bengal Drape is a distinctive style steeped in cultural heritage, known for its simplicity and artistic flair. Unlike the pleated Nivi style, this drape involves no pleating, which makes it easy to wear. Just tie the saree as you would wear it normally, and tuck in the fabric you would generally use for pleats at either corner of your waist. The pallu is thrown over the shoulder and then brought up over the other shoulder from behind, creating a double-layered effect. The Bengal Drape allows for a free-flowing, elegant look that is both comfortable and striking and is particularly suited for handloom sarees with decorative borders.

The Reverse Drape

Another hands-free saree drape is the Reverse Drape, where the saree is worn with the pallu coming from the back to the front. Start by draping your saree the traditional way but bring the pallu over from the back to the front on the opposite side. This unexpected twist adds a dash of surprise and elegance. Plus it’s eminently customizable. You can create a front cape by tucking the front end of the saree on your shoulder, or pair with a corset top for a more avant-garde look.

The Waterfall Drape

For a modern twist on the classic style of the saree try the Waterfall drape, which is inspired by older traditions of a looser way of wearing a saree that’s currently making a comeback. This involves wearing your saree in the usual style but pleating your saree pallu tightly towards the top while letting the bottom cascade in a loose ‘waterfall’ drape. This is a perfect look if you want to keep things formal or traditional but with a slight twist - and is great for evenings. You can even pair it with a belt to accentuate the look even more.

The Urban Nomad

If you’re not afraid to let your boho flag fly high, the Urban Nomad drape is a unique and modern way to style a linen saree, and  captures the essence of modern versatility. This draping method transforms the traditional saree into a bold outfit that doesn’t compromise on functionality. This style is perfect for those who want to make a striking fashion statement and works especially well with solid, bold colours and simple designs.

The Classic Nivi

The Classic Nivi is a timeless saree draping style that epitomizes grace and tradition. This style involves wrapping the saree around the waist with elegant pleats tucked in front, while the pallu is draped neatly over the shoulder, cascading down the back. The Nivi offers a perfect blend of comfort and timeless elegance, making it a popular choice for formal events and everyday elegance alike. It beautifully showcases the saree's borders and patterns, making it a versatile choice that complements a variety of fabrics and designs.

Whether you’re at a casual coffee date, a corporate getaway, or a black-tie event, there's always a way to tweak the traditional saree drape to suit the occasion and reflect your personal style.
